Directors Reading List
SUN students are welcome to request a meeting with the Executive Director to discuss any of the books on this list. The only requirement is that the student has read the book, and comes ready to discuss the content! This meeting does not replace your normal time spent with a SSC SUN Staff, but it does offer the opportunity to meet with SUN’s leadership.
WHERE CAN I GET THE BOOK?
All the books on this list can easily be obtained for free by renting them from a public library or your college/university. Oftentimes, books can also be purchased used and for cheap on different reseller websites. I believe in you and your ability to find a copy of the book!
WHY BOOKS?
In this day and age, social media, AI, and the internet constantly promotes ways to keep our attention. Our attention, and the ability to think critically, are both expendable resources that are priceless to one’s ability to navigate the world. Books are special, so as they require comprehensive thought, engagement, and reflection - it is a way to bring the investment of one’s own attention directly back to the self. Books are way to navigate an idea, lesson, or story and promote our ability to think critically on the lessons to take away, the lessons to reject, and the plots and narrative worth deconstructing. Books are the sum of the authors experiences, imaginative energies, and thoughts orchestrated into a few hundred pages. Regardless of agreeability, books affirm, contest, or challenge our existing beliefs. Reading at its core also translates into good righting, and reading critically translates into a more thoughtful and meaningful engagement with the world.
THE MEETING
Once you’ve read a book and feel ready to discuss it, you can request a meeting via my Calendly. This meeting can be at either your college, library, or coffee shop. I will be more than happy to cover coffee if a coffee shop is chosen!
